    The World's 50 Best Bars

    Ranked No. 1. · 2017

One of London's defining cocktail institutions, the American Bar combines the rituals of grand-hotel service with a bartending legacy that helped establish the international cocktail canon.

    The Story

    Origin

Opened in 1893 within The Savoy, the bar takes its name from the American-style mixed drinks that distinguished it from traditional British drinking rooms. Its early history includes Ada Coleman, creator of the Hanky Panky, and Harry Craddock, compiler of The Savoy Cocktail Book, published in 1930.

    Philosophy

Continuity matters as much as invention. The bar's identity rests on making serious cocktail craft feel welcoming within a formal hotel setting.

    Why Important

A foundational reference for the luxury hotel bar, it demonstrates how an institution can preserve its cultural authority while continuing to develop new cocktail menus.

    Differentiation

Few cocktail bars can connect their present-day service so directly to bartenders, recipes and publications that shaped the profession.

    Guest Experience

Guests encounter tableside hospitality, classic and contemporary cocktails, and live piano, with a sense of occasion shaped by the surrounding hotel.

    Design Philosophy

An intimate, polished room supports conversation and attentive service rather than competing with the drinks for attention.

    Design & Architecture

    Lighting

Soft, warm lighting creates an evening atmosphere and keeps the focus on individual tables.

    Furniture

Upholstered armchairs and banquettes arranged around small tables.

    Architecture

A dedicated bar within The Savoy's historic hotel building.

    Design Language

Understated grand-hotel glamour with Art Deco references.

    Interior Design

A compact, seated drinking room defined by upholstered seating, cocktail tables, framed photographs and a piano.
