Madrid's defining Belle Époque grand hotel, opened in 1910 and comprehensively restored before reopening under Mandarin Oriental in 2021. Its significance lies in the continuity of ceremonial hospitality beside the Prado, refreshed with contemporary Spanish gastronomy and a substantial wellness offering.

    The Story

    Origin

Opened in 1910 with the support of King Alfonso XIII, the Ritz helped establish Madrid as a destination capable of receiving international society with the standards of Europe's great palace hotels. It reopened in 2021 following an extensive restoration.

    Philosophy

Preserve the identity of a Madrid institution while bringing its accommodation, dining and wellness infrastructure into contemporary luxury hospitality.

    Why Important

A foundational reference for luxury hospitality in Madrid and a useful case study in renewing a historic hotel without sacrificing its civic identity.

    Differentiation

Few Madrid hotels combine a pre-war grand-hotel pedigree, this proximity to the Prado and a restoration of comparable scope.

    Food Philosophy

Quique Dacosta's culinary direction makes Spanish gastronomy central to the hotel, with Deessa providing its most ambitious fine-dining expression.

    Guest Experience

A formal but varied city-hotel experience, moving between destination dining, afternoon tea, garden drinks and an indoor wellness area, with the Prado and other major museums nearby.

    Design Philosophy

Recover the building's architectural grandeur without treating the interiors as a frozen period reconstruction.

    Design & Architecture

    Lighting

Daylight through the Palm Court's glass roof contrasts with decorative lighting in the more intimate dining and lounge spaces.

    Furniture

A mix of classical silhouettes and bespoke contemporary pieces.

    Materials

Marble, decorative metalwork, glass and richly textured upholstery.

    Architecture

An early twentieth-century purpose-built grand hotel facing Plaza de la Lealtad. The restoration recovered the glass roof over the central Palm Court.

    Design Language

Belle Époque grandeur interpreted through restrained contemporary luxury.

    Interior Design

Gilles & Boissier balanced historic decorative elements with a lighter palette, bespoke furnishings and contemporary art.
