    Speakeasies in Rome

    Photo: Official website · thejerrythomasproject.it

A small, reservation-led speakeasy that helped reshape Rome's cocktail culture. Opened in 2010, it combines historically informed drinks with the intimacy and theatrical entry rituals of a private drinking club.

    The Story

    Origin

Founded in 2010 by four bartenders, the project takes its name from Jerry Thomas, the nineteenth-century American bartender and author. It emerged as a place to investigate classic cocktail recipes and introduce a more research-led approach to drinking in Rome.

    Philosophy

Treat bartending as a craft grounded in historical knowledge, technical discipline and conversation with the guest.

    Why Important

A foundational address in Rome's modern cocktail movement, it helped establish the city as a destination for serious cocktail drinking beyond traditional hotel bars.

    Differentiation

Its significance lies in pairing a convincing speakeasy format with genuine research into the history and practice of mixing drinks.

    Guest Experience

Reservations, a password tradition and a membership format make arrival part of the experience. Inside, the emphasis shifts to close interaction with bartenders and carefully constructed cocktails. Current entry requirements should be checked directly.

    Design Philosophy

An enclosed, vintage-inflected room makes the experience feel removed from the street outside. Its scale and low lighting support the speakeasy premise rather than competing with the drinks.

    Design & Architecture

    Lighting

Low, warm lighting reinforces the room's enclosed, late-night character.

    Furniture

A mixture of upholstered seating and small tables encourages close conversation.

    Architecture

A discreet street-level venue in Rome's historic centre.

    Design Language

    Intimate, vintage-inspired speakeasy.

    Interior Design

Dark tones, upholstered seating and period-style decorative elements create a compact salon atmosphere.
