A foundational London grand hotel, combining theatrical heritage, Thames-facing rooms and influential cocktail bars. Its significance lies as much in the service and dining traditions it helped establish as in its Edwardian and Art Deco interiors.

    The Story

    Origin

Theatre impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte opened the hotel in 1889 beside his Savoy Theatre. Early leadership by César Ritz and Auguste Escoffier helped make it a reference point for European luxury hospitality.

    Philosophy

Grand-hotel hospitality built around personal service, ceremony and continuity, with an unusually strong connection to London's theatre and entertainment worlds.

    Why Important

The Savoy helped define the modern British luxury hotel. It remains essential to understanding how restaurants, bars and service personalities can give a hotel cultural relevance beyond its rooms.

    Differentiation

Few London hotels combine comparable theatrical origins, river frontage and influence on both professional hotel service and cocktail culture.

    Food Philosophy

Restaurants, afternoon tea and cocktail bars function as destinations in their own right. The hotel's culinary legacy includes Escoffier, while the American Bar holds a central place in British cocktail history.

    Guest Experience

A theatrical arrival leads to formal public rooms, destination bars and accommodation ranging from inward-facing rooms to expansive river-view suites. The West End and Covent Garden are close by.

    Design Philosophy

Edwardian grandeur and Art Deco glamour coexist rather than being reduced to a single period style. The 2010 restoration preserved that layered identity while renewing the hotel's infrastructure.

    Design & Architecture

    Lighting

Chandeliers and decorative lamps reinforce the formal character of the public interiors.

    Furniture

Period-inspired furnishings vary between Edwardian and Art Deco settings.

    Materials

Marble, polished wood, decorative metalwork and richly textured upholstery.

    Architecture

A historic hotel complex between the Strand and the Thames, originally designed by Thomas Edward Collcutt.

    Design Language

Edwardian grandeur with Art Deco counterpoints.

    Interior Design

Richly differentiated public rooms and guest accommodation, with the major 2010 restoration led by Pierre-Yves Rochon.
