A landmark of Barcelona’s traditional dining culture, founded in 1836 and particularly associated with rice dishes and Catalan cooking. Its arcaded setting and historic dining rooms offer an important counterpoint to the city’s experimental restaurants.
Established in 1836 as a café in the Porxos d’en Xifré, it evolved into a restaurant closely associated with Barcelona’s public and cultural life. The Parellada family took over in 1942.
Maintain a living tradition of Catalan hospitality rather than treating culinary heritage as a museum exhibit.
An essential heritage reference in a city often discussed primarily through its avant-garde chefs. Its importance lies in the continuity of Barcelona’s social dining culture as much as in individual dishes.
Longevity, civic associations and a clearly identifiable repertoire distinguish it from newer destination restaurants.
Rice dishes, seafood and established Catalan recipes anchor a broad menu, with the house’s Parellada rice among its best-known preparations.
A substantial traditional meal in a lively, formally laid dining room, suited to family gatherings and visitors exploring Catalan cuisine.
Preserve the recognisable character of a historic Barcelona dining room through continuity of setting and service.
Traditional decorative lighting
Bentwood-style chairs, banquette seating and white-tablecloth tables
Wood, glass and black-and-white floor tiles
Occupies part of the nineteenth-century Porxos d’en Xifré, behind its characteristic arcades.
Historic Catalan restaurant
Historic dining rooms combine framed artworks, mirrors, dark timber and patterned flooring.
The numeral-led name makes the restaurant’s seven-door origin central to its identity.
