Ori Menashe and Genevieve Gergis's Arts District restaurant helped establish the template for ambitious, high-energy Los Angeles dining in the 2010s. House-made charcuterie, pasta, wood-fired cooking and serious pastry share the stage in a converted industrial setting.

    The Story

    Origin

Bestia opened in 2012 in the Arts District, bringing together chef Ori Menashe, pastry chef Genevieve Gergis and founding restaurateur Bill Chait.

    Philosophy

Labour-intensive kitchen craft belongs in an energetic, accessible-feeling restaurant rather than exclusively in a formal dining room.

    Why Important

Bestia helped consolidate the Arts District as a dining destination and became an influential model for chef-driven restaurants pairing industrial design with technically ambitious, informal food.

    Differentiation

Its strength is the combination of substantial in-house production, assertive flavours and a room with the energy of a social destination.

    Food Philosophy

Italian traditions provide the framework for house-made cured meats, pasta, pizza and wood-fired dishes. Pastry is treated as an integral part of the restaurant's identity.

    Guest Experience

A loud, busy room, shared dishes and visible kitchen activity create a communal evening rather than a hushed tasting-menu ritual.

    Design Philosophy

The industrial shell remains visible, while custom details and an exposed kitchen turn the room into an active part of the dining experience.

    Design & Architecture

    Lighting

Custom suspended fixtures contribute warmth and visual rhythm to the industrial interior.

    Furniture

A mix of banquettes, dining tables and counter seating supports a dense, animated room.

    Materials

Exposed brick, concrete, metal and wood

    Architecture

An adapted industrial space preserves the scale and exposed character associated with the Arts District.

    Design Language

    Industrial with bespoke contemporary detailing

    Interior Design

Studio UNLTD combined the raw shell with custom lighting, seating and an open kitchen.
