The Gallery at sketch turns afternoon tea into an art-and-design experience. Its successive interior installations, particularly the former pink room and its later yellow-toned incarnation, have made it an internationally recognisable hospitality space.

    The Story

    Origin

The Gallery forms part of sketch, established in 2002 by Mourad Mazouz and Pierre Gagnaire. Its identity has evolved through successive artist and designer collaborations.

    Philosophy

Art and interior design are central components of hospitality rather than background decoration.

    Why Important

An influential case study in hospitality as an evolving exhibition. Michelin distinctions associated with sketch's Lecture Room & Library should not be attributed to this room.

    Differentiation

The Gallery has achieved broad recognition through complete, highly legible visual worlds.

    Food Philosophy

Afternoon tea provides a familiar ritual within an unconventional cultural setting.

    Guest Experience

Tea, pastries, service rituals and artwork create a destination experience closer to a designed salon than an everyday coffee shop.

    Design Philosophy

The room is periodically reinterpreted, allowing the venue to renew its visual identity without abandoning its core format.

    Design & Architecture

    Lighting

Warm lighting reinforces the room's enveloping colour palette.

    Furniture

Rounded, sculptural seating is integral to the room's visual identity.

    Materials

Upholstery, metallic finishes and richly textured surfaces.

    Architecture

Part of a multi-room hospitality venue in a historic Conduit Street townhouse.

    Design Language

Immersive colour, sculptural seating and contemporary art.

    Interior Design

India Mahdavi's celebrated pink scheme was replaced in 2022 by a warm yellow and copper-toned design featuring work by Yinka Shonibare.
